One of the most important parts of being a product manager is ensuring that you are building the right things and building them right. Stephen Covey (late author of Seven Habits of Highly Effective People) uses the analogy of a ladder. Many product managers worry about how quickly the team is climbing the ladder (ahem… Burndown charts). But the more important question is whether the team is climbing up the right wall to begin with.

I had the privilege to speak with Bjork Ostrom of Food Blogger Pro on their podcast about the principles of customer feedback, how it should shape early product development, and the overall purpose of a product manager. Bjork and Lindsay Ostrom run one of the most successful food blogs of all time, PinchOfYum.com. Over the last decade, they’ve applied their learnings as successful food bloggers to create a suite of products supporting bloggers everywhere: WP Tasty, a WordPress plugin library for food bloggers; Food Blogger Pro, a community of resources for up-and-coming food bloggers; Clariti.com, (which we’ve had the privilege of working on) a content optimization and organization tool for bloggers; and Nutrifox, a tool for helping bloggers create nutrition labels for their food recipes.
